Coun. Bill McNulty said he won't be running with Richmond First in the 2022 municipal election.

It seems Richmond First might not be in the mix in the 2022 municipal election for city council seats.

Coun. Bill McNulty told the Richmond News it seems the political slate has “served its purpose.”

McNulty confirmed he is running for re-election but he’ll either run independently, with another slate or another alliance of candidates.

However, he added, he thinks electors don’t really vote for slates anymore.

McNulty praised Richmond First as a good organization for its time, but he thinks it is no longer relevant.

McNulty and Coun. Linda McPhail, who hasn’t confirmed whether she is running for re-election, were both elected on the Richmond First slate in the 2018 election.

Long-time Richmond First councillor Derek Dang was defeated in that election.

In the 2018 election, the Richmond Citizens’ Association and RITE Richmond joined forces at the end of the campaign period, endorsing each others’ candidates. In the end, they elected four councillors.

Coun. Andy Hobbs has previously run on the Richmond First slate but when he ran in the May by-election for a vacant Richmond city council seat, he ran as an independent.

The municipal election, for school trustees, city councillors and mayor, will take place Oct. 15, 2022.
