As the holiday season comes to an end and the decorations come down, Richmondites can support local charities while getting their Christmas trees chipped.
Richmond fire fighters hold their annual tree-chipping event this weekend at Garry Point Park, collecting donations that will go to local charities.
The fire fighters will be chipping trees on Saturday, Jan. 4 and Sunday, Jan. 5 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Garry Point Park is located at 12011 7th Ave. (at Chatham Street).
For those who can’t make it this weekend – or keep their trees up longer – Christmas trees can also be dropped off at the city’s recycling depot at 5555 Lynas Lane from Tuesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. – except Jan. 1 when the recycling depot is closed.
Trees can also be left with the Green Cart collection, but they need to be chopped up and bundled to a maximum size of three feet by two feet, and the branches can’t be larger than four inches in diameter. Place trees beside the Green Cart on collection day.
Richmond residents can also drop off trees at Ecowaste Industries Ltd. for free. For hours of operation, call 604-277-1410 or go to EcoWaste.com. Proof of residency is required.
