The number of weekly COVID-19 cases in Richmond almost doubled, all the while vaccination rates in all neighbourhoods are high.

There were 65 new cases from Nov. 28 to Dec. 4 in Richmond, up from the previously reported week (Nov. 21-27) when there were 35 cases, according to the latest data from the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC).

And neighbourhood data shows higher case rates in some areas, for example, the weekly case rate per 100,000 residents was 10 in Steveston (data is from Nov. 30 to Dec. 6) and in the Gilmore/Shellmont/East/Hamilton area, the case rate was eight per 100,000 residents.

In East/West Cambie/Bridgeport, this number was six.

The province reported Wednesday there were 379 new cases of COVID-19 over the previous 24 hours across B.

Kids getting vaccinated

Health authorities recently started vaccinating children aged five to 12 - using a pediatric vaccine - and it seems like Steveston residents have been quick to jump onto this bandwagon – 27 per cent of children in this age category have received their first dose.

In other Richmond neighbourhoods this ranges from 11 per cent in City Centre to 15 per cent in Thompson/Seafair.

As for those aged 12 and older who have two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, Richmond rates range from 94 per cent in City Centre to 87 per cent in Broadmoor and Blundell.

Starting Monday, Richmond’s COVID-19 vaccination clinic will be held at the Pacific Autism Family  Network at 3688 Cessna Dr. – the River Rock Casino clinic is closing on Thursday (Dec. 9).
