A first date moved quickly for one Richmond couple, early Tuesday evening. A little too quickly for one police officer’s liking.
“Even though the road appeared flat and straight, as they usually do in Richmond, it looked like it was bumpy,” said Cpl. Dennis Hwang, spokesperson for Richmond RCMP.
“The officer did a double take and thought, ‘Is that what I think is going on?’” said Hwang.
Indeed. It was.
Texting and driving is now a serious offence in B.C. with the penalty for a first-time offences now at $500. Likewise, “sexting” and driving bears the same penalty.
But “sexing” and driving?
"The couple was engaged in coitus," said Hwang.
Hwang said the officer pulled the car over around No. 5 Road and Westminster Highway and, in a respectful manner, issued a ticket for driving without due care.
“It took a bit of time to gather the (insurance) documents,” said Hwang.
The male driver and his new found partner — who claimed to be on their first date — were also issued tickets for not wearing their seatbelts as they drove.
“As you can imagine, it would be difficult to wear a seatbelt if there are two people” in one seat, noted Hwang.
Hwang said although the incident ended up to be a light-hearted tale, ultimately the couple, described only as over age 30, was lucky not to have gotten in an accident.
“The potential to get seriously injured is quite great,” said Hwang.
Having worked as an officer in Richmond for 19 years, Hwang said he’s never heard of such a case.
“We do see it in stationary vehicles,” he said.
It remains unclear if the driver’s compromised position was compensated by having four eyes on the road.
“I’ll leave that up to the imagination of (the) readers,” said Hwang.
