Richmond charity desperately needs storage space

A Richmond-based charity is pleading with the community to help it find some storage space – and fast.

At the end of April, the Blanket BC Society will have to clear out hundreds of blankets and bedding from its donated storage space in Burnaby.

The charity – founded by Richmond resident Greg Ould – distributes donated blankets to those in need locally and around the world.

But its main sponsor, U-Lock Storage, is feeling the pinch like many businesses and can no longer donate storage space for the blankets.

“Some warehouse space would be great…maybe someone isn’t using all of their warehouse,” Ould said to the Richmond News this week.

“U-Lock have been amazing, but it’s just too costly for them now. They’ve already given us more than $60,000 of donated space over the years.

“We’re in dire need of space. We need about 300 to 500 square feet to store blankets and other donated items.”

Ould said the charity needs the space year round as it collects the items year round, including at this weekend’s Vancouver Warrior’s lacrosse game at Rogers Arena.

“We have until the end of April to find space. It’s kind of a helpless feeling. If we don’t find a place, I really don’t know where we’re going to put it as we have two storage spaces filled with product right now.

“The emergency shelters are closed right now so we can’t send anything there. We have a lot of stuff.

“I really can’t have it here at my house; it’s rented and I don’t think my landlord would be too happy.”
