An unsuccessful Richmond city council candidate has been fined $600 for over-contributing to his own campaign.

Adil Awan ran for city council in the October 2022 election, receiving 4,197 votes.

Awan was allowed to contribute $2,500 to his own campaign, but his financial disclosure forms from early January showed he contributed $3,824.

The maximum penalty that could have been imposed by Elections BC was $2,648 – double the over-contribution.

In its enforcement notice, Elections BC noted Awan returned the amount after being notified by their office.

“Once contacted by Elections BC, you cooperatively brought yourself into compliance,” the enforcement notice states.

Based on the fact Awan cooperated and hasn’t been the subject of previous penalties, Elections BC set the penalty at $600.

Awan is allowed to ask for a review within 14 days or seek relief from BC Supreme Court.
