Two students from Richmond’s army cadet program, whose official name is 2947 39 Service Battalion Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps (RCACC), have been selected for training opportunities in the United Kingdom this summer.
Funded in part by the Government of Canada, the free army cadet program offers military-structured training to boys and girls aged 12 to 18.
Daniel Cai was selected to represent Canada as part of the national rifle team to compete in Bisley, England. He has stood out in competitions in Fullbore in the U.S., which selected the 18 best shooters placing for the national team.
“Selection for this team has taken place over the course of the past two years,” said Capt Jeff Ng, commanding officer of 2947 RCACC, in a press release.
Timothy Chao was selected as one of 60 cadets across Canada to participate in the Maple Leaf Exchange this summer in the U.K.
Training will consist of a combination of citizenship tours, expedition and adventure sports training, and military skills training alongside the British Army Cadet Force, according to Ng.
“Selection for this prestigious opportunity was made through an assessment of each applicant’s training progression, and including an intensive application process requiring submissions of cover letters, references, and training profiles,” he said.
Both trips are funded by the army cadet program, and Cai and Chao will participate in training in Ottawa prior to their departure to the U.K.
"Cai and Chao’s selections mark the fifth consecutive year that 2947’s cadets have been selected for training opportunities in Europe," added Ng.
