Richmond bylaws officers are ready to respond to any Halloween partiers breaking the COVID-19 rules.
“Should someone believe there is a violation of those rules taking place, they can either call our Bylaws officers or the RCMP non-emergency line,” said City of Richmond spokesperson Clay Adams.
“City staff will respond to complaints and ensure those involved are aware of the need to comply.”
Earlier this week – as COVID-19 cases continue to increase across the province since Thanksgiving – B.C.’s provincial health officer issued a public health order limiting gatherings in private homes to residents, plus no more than six visitors.
“It’s those indoor settings where we’re close, when we are talking to somebody, when we’re sharing food, when we’re in an environment where we let our guard down that (the virus) can be transmitted,” said Dr. Bonnie Henry on Thursday.
While the city can’t issue fines, bylaws officers can advise Richmond Mounties if there are any concerns around non-compliance, said Adams, and police can issue fines under the public health orders.
In addition to mass gatherings, fireworks are also not permitted in Richmond, added Adams.
Under city bylaws, anyone who possesses, buys, sells or detonates fireworks and firecrackers in Richmond can face a fine of up to $1,000.
“Follow the rules and you shouldn’t expect a visit from bylaws staff or the RCMP. We want everyone to have a safe and happy Halloween.”
