A German Shepherd puppy was rescued from the Fraser River after it was seen struggling against the currents last week.

A German Shepherd puppy was saved from drowning in the Fraser River after it was seen struggling to stay afloat last Wednesday.

According to the Richmond RCMP, visitors at McDonald Beach Park saw a dog struggling and swimming against the river current around 1:30 p.m. on June 2.

The witnesses alerted frontline officer Cst. Niko Geneblaza, who had been patrolling in the park at the time, and was able to flag down a nearby boat with the help of bystanders.

Boat operator Mitch Misyk and passenger Chantal Mcdonald rescued the young German Shepard which was “visibly shaken,” but was happily reunited with its owner, who apparently had not realized their dog had entered the water, according to the Richmond RCMP.

Cpl. Ian Henderson, spokesperson for the Richmond RCMP, said everyone was pleased with the outcome, but the incident should “serve as a reminder.”

“With boating and beach season now underway, we need to remember that it only takes a moment for accidents to happen in, on and near the water,” said Henderson.
