Fun fact about Richmond...
Do you know what was needed to stabilize the ground before the Richmond Olympic Oval was built?
Because the Oval was built on the Fraser River delta, engineers had to install more than 2,000 rock columns, each reaching depths of 26 metres, as well as 100,000 cubic metres of sand to stabilize the ground.
Even though the foundation of the ground was prepared extensively, additional supports with Franki piles, a type of cast-in-place pile foundation, were needed to meet the strict flatness standards needed for Olympic speed skating events.
