Ten months after a crack was found in one of the pools at the Minoru Centre for Active Living – caused by “construction workmanship deficiencies” - repairs are expected to finally begin.

The aquatic centre with several pools, which was supposed to open in March, has been shuttered since the crack was noticed in February. Since then, the city has been working to figure out what went wrong and whose insurance company – the contractor’s or the city’s - would pay for the repairs.

In the end, it was determined “the failure was caused by construction workmanship deficiencies,” according to a press release from the city. The insurance company for Stuart Olson, the contractor, will pay for the repairs.

The city has hired Omicron Construction to do the repairs, which are complex and expected to take several months. There won’t be a timeline until Omicron does a complete report with a detailed analysis, according to city spokesperson Clay Adams. Work is set to begin “shortly,” the press release stated.

The fitness centre, whose entrance is linked with the aquatic centre, has also remained closed but is expected to open in January.

The entire centre is expected to be open in fall 2020.
