The Editor,
I was disappointed by the recent letter from public school teacher, passing disparaging remarks against parents who choose a private school option for their children and chastising my MLA, John Yap, for supporting such choices.
As a parent whose son attended private school, I appreciate the fact this government has given me the choice of where I want to have my son educated.
Simply pushing a "one size fits all" solution does not reflect the options that parents see in every aspect of their child's life - let alone forcing that on something as paramount as their education.
With respect to the funding provided by the B.C. government to private schools, it's equivalent to about 4 per cent of the budget given to public schools.
It's certainly not a drain on resources, rather given the vast majority of fees for private schools are paid for by parents, it's not only an investment that promotes choice, it also frees up resources for the public system.
If we were to shut down every private school in the province, I can only imagine the pressure that would place on our public system.
Thank you to the B.C. government and John Yap, for giving me and my family a choice.
