Prince George's Spruceland Traditional alerted for COVID-19 exposure event

It's the 21st SD57 school to be flagged for the virus

Spruceland Traditional Elementary is the newest on a long list of schools reported for a COVID-19 exposure event.

Today (Feb. 16), Northern Health notified the School District 57 (SD57) member of possible exposure to students, staff and its community on Feb. 8 and 9.

This means someone may have come into contact with a person who recently tested positive for the virus.

Spruceland is now the 21st Prince George-based institution to experience at least one exposure event since classes returned in September, including 18 with SD57 and three private or independent schools.

Meanwhile, Heather Park and Cedars Christian were alerted for additional COVID-19 exposure events.

Heather Park is cited for Feb. 10, its fourth possible exposure event, while Cedars is listed for Feb. 8, its third since the fall.

Northern Health's school-exposure section explains students should still go to school "if you do not receive a phone call or letter from Public Health," but you're also encouraged to monitor symptoms daily.

  • Contact tracing is initiated to determine how the individual was infected and who they were in close contact with
  • We identify and notify close contacts who may be at an increased risk, and advise them to self-isolate and monitor for symptoms for 14 days
  • Only Public Health can determine who is a close contact
    • Learning groups, friends or other connections may not be determined to be a close contact
  • Public Health staff works closely with the school and school district throughout the case and contact management process to maintain close communication with the school community

As of this publication, Northern Health has recorded 4,104 COVID-19 infections since March last year, including 135 new cases since Friday (Feb. 12).

There have been 101 deaths from the virus in the region, while 334 people are listed as active.

The authority also currently has nine people in critical care among 39 hospitalizations, and 3,636 recoveries.
