A 20th Prince George area school has been marked for a COVID-19 exposure event.
Today (Feb. 12), Giscome Elementary was warned of someone in its surrounding community that recently tested positive for the virus.
Students and staff at the School District 57 (SD57) institution may have come into contact with that person on Feb. 4, 2021, according to Northern Health.
It's the first time Giscome Elementary, located in the community of Willow River roughly 40 km northeast of downtown Prince George, has been listed for possible exposure to COVID-19.
Since the start of classes in September, 17 SD57 schools have experienced at least one COVID-19 exposure event in addition to three independent or private Prince George educational facilities.
Northern Health's school-exposure section explains students should still go to school "if you do not receive a phone call or letter from Public Health," but you're also encouraged to monitor symptoms daily.
- Contact tracing is initiated to determine how the individual was infected and who they were in close contact with
- We identify and notify close contacts who may be at an increased risk, and advise them to self-isolate and monitor for symptoms for 14 days
- Only Public Health can determine who is a close contact
- Learning groups, friends or other connections may not be determined to be a close contact
- Public Health staff works closely with the school and school district throughout the case and contact management process to maintain close communication with the school community

Today, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry reported 30 new COVID-19 infections in Northern Health for an updated regional total of 3,969 since March 2020.
This has included 94 deaths with 332 current active cases, as per the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC).
There are also seven people admitted into critical care among 10 hospitalizations, and 3,518 recoveries.
