A police standoff in Vancouver’s West End has ended peacefully.

Just after 8 p.m. Wednesday officers arrested a 34-year-old Vancouver man who had been holed up in a Beach Avenue residence for more than 12 hours.

At around 4 a.m. police were called to a disturbance in an apartment on Hornby Street near Drake. Officers located two men and a woman in the suite, along with "a quantity" of drugs and a gun. As the officers were arresting the three people, one of the men fled on foot. Police tracked the man to his residence a couple of blocks away.

The man refused to open the door for officers. Police negotiators, the emergency response team and other first responders were called in and secured the area around Hornby Street and Beach Avenue throughout the day until the suspect was arrested just after 8 p.m.

“Public safety, including the safety if suspects and our officers, is a priority for the VPD,” Const. Jason Doucette said in a press release. “Once the man was isolated in his residence there was no indication that anyone was in danger. Our officers continued to use a calm and patient approach that led to a safe resolution.”

The 34-year-old Vancouver man, along with a 29-year-old Coquitlam man and a 25-year-old woman from Whistler, who were arrested at the initial location, all remain in custody.
