You'll be able to stick your hands into wet cement and play in the largest sandbox you'll ever see at the free family event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the city's operations yard, 5599 Lynas Lane.

As well, gardeners can grab some free topsoil, while future Bob the Builders can get up close and personal by going on and inside dump trucks, graders, excavators, and other real-life heavy equipment.

Kids of all ages can win prizes or go for a hayride tour of the works yard.

Other activities include the CUPE 394 Classic Car Show, live music, face painting, hands-on cement display, community safety display, plant and bulb sale by the parks department.

Bring your personal water bottle. Richmond's portable water station will be there so you can help yourself to some of Canada's best drinking water.

People can also learn more about the programs, services and equipment that keeps the city running.

The open house celebrates the 52nd National Public Works Week, May 20 to 26, recognizing the men and women who maintain the infrastructure services known as public works.

Cities across the nation participate by raising awareness of public works issues, and encouraging community support for these dedicated employees.
