Photos: 2022 Nations Cup back with a bang

Thousands of players and fans swarmed the soccer fields of Richmond for the first time in three years

The weather may not have been summer-like on the weekend, but it failed to dampen the spirit that shone from the long-awaited return of the Nations Cup of soccer in Richmond.

Cancelled the last two years due to the pandemic, the annual feast of football came back with a bang over the three days of action at Hugh Boyd, Minoru and South Arm fields.

Thousands of amateur players and fans from across Western Canada poured into town for the tournament, played across all ages and sexes.

The highlight men’s open final was won by Croatia, which beat the perennial favourites and multiple winners India 2-0.

The men’s over 52s went to India, 2-1 over China, while the 45s section was won by Romania, 3-1 over England.

The men’s 38s went to England with a 2-1 victory over Canada, with the men’s over 30 title also going to England, which defeated Iran 2-0.

In the women’s open division, Canada took the title once more, taking care of Italy 3-1.
