Passerby helps Richmond RCMP foil kidnapping attempt

Two men charged, gun found at scene after Sunday afternoon incident in north Richmond

Thanks to some sharp-eyed observations by a passerby the Richmond RCMP foiled a kidnapping Sunday afternoon.

Sgt. Cam Kowalski, a spokesman for the Richmond RCMP, said shortly after 2 p.m. officers received a call from someone who witnessed four suspicious males approach a man and his son in the 3000-block of Corvette Way.

He said the witness alleges the four males handcuffed the victim and the boy and forced them into the back of the vehicle.

Richmond RCMP stopped the vehicle using information from the witness a short distance from the area and two males were arrested on suspicion of kidnapping.

Kowalski said a handgun was recovered at the scene.

There were no injuries to the victim or the victim's son. Police believe this was a targeted incident, but do not believe that it was gang related.

Donald Stalker, 27, of Richmond and Raymond Truong, 19, of Burnaby are charged with kidnapping, forcible confinement with a firearm, using a prohibited weapon to commit a robbery and possession of a prohibited weapon.

Kowalski praised the efforts of the witness to alert police quickly.

"That's (the public) our lifeline, folks like that," Kowalski said. "We need those people calling in and honestly, that doesn't always happen. This is outstanding."
