No. 5 and Cambie T-bone town

Intersection 3rd worst in Metro

ICBC recently released its list of Metro Vancouver's eight worst intersections and Cambie and No. 5 roads made number three.

As part of its sixweek High Risk Driving Campaign, which is set to launch next week, ICBC is partnering with local police throughout Metro Vancouver to ramp up police presence at its worst intersections during the month of May.

The Cambie and No. 5 roads intersection is especially dangerous, said Mark Milner, ICBC road safety program manager, because it is prone to many T-bone crashes.

"There were more than 100 T-bone accidents in a seven-year period and that is very significant," he said. "As well, five pedestrians have been struck there between 2004 and 2010.

"Often there's nothing particularly special about the design of the intersection. It has more to do with the amount of traffic, number of people running red lights and those following too closely behind another vehicle."

TOP EIGHT WORST INTERSECTIONS:

1. Knight St. at 57th Ave. (Vancouver)

2. 88 Ave. at King George Hwy. (Surrey)

3. Cambie Rd. at No. 5 Rd. (Richmond)

4. Lougheed Hwy. at Schoolhouse St. (Coquitlam)

5. Lougheed Hwy. at Shaughnessy St. (Port Coquitlam)

6. Marine Dr. at Taylor Way (West Vancouver)

7. Willingdon Ave. at Canada Way (Burnaby)

8. Cambie St. at 41st Ave. (Vancouver)
