Two Richmond News reporters have been nominated for provincial writing awards.

Philip Raphael is a finalist in the Environmental Writing Award category of the 2016 BCYCNA Ma Murray Community Newspaper Awards for his feature titled Closing the Net.

The story focused on the initiative of Steveston Harbour’s Joel Baziuk to recycle old fishing nets into carpet tiles.

Raphael’s colleague, Graeme Wood, has also been named a finalist at the awards, receiving recognition in the Sports Writing Award category for The Graeme Project, where he teamed up with a local golf pro, Mark Strong, for the entirety of the 2015 golf season in a bid to transform from a fair-weather hacker to a player with a respectable handicap.

“It’s fabulous to see our staff getting kudos for the hard work they put in every single week. It’s also a testament to the entire team at the Richmond News,” said editor Eve Edmonds.

“The features in question could not be further apart in their subject matter, but both serve the reader well in terms of getting people inside the heads of the main protagonists and are worthy of their nominations.

“Everyone at the News wishes them both well when it comes to the awards night itself later this year.”

The Ma Murray Awards are an opportunity to recognize the achievements of the association’s 110 member newspapers in British Columbia and Yukon.

There are finalists in a total of 45 categories — ranging from ad design and classifieds to photography, editorial and general newspaper excellence.

This year’s Ma Murray Community Newspaper Awards gala dinner is being held Saturday, May 7 at the River Rock Casino Resort.
