New West police brave chilly waters for Special Olympics BC

Brrrrr: Local cops take the plunge into icy waters – all for a good cause

While many New West residents and city crews were preparing for Snowmaggedon, some local police officers were taking a plunge into the ocean.

Snow may have been in the forecast, but six New West police officers joined emergency responders from other parts of the Lower Mainland in taking a quick dip in the waters at Rocky Point Park in Port Moody on Saturday afternoon. It was part of the Plunge for Special Olympics BC.

“It was colder than I thought it would be. Once I got in past my waist it took my breath away,” said NWPD Sgt. Andrew Leaver. “It was fun to do this as a team and support such a great cause.”

Leaver said he’s proud of the New Westminster Police Department team, which raised more than $5,100 for Special Olympics BC.

“Six of us took the plunge, but behind us were a multitude of supporters,” he said. “I would like to thank all of the team, our department, and the many friends, family, and community members who supported us in doing this.”

According to Special Olympics BC, Take the Plunge supports year-round sport, youth, and health programs for athletes with intellectual disabilities. “Plungers” are taking to waterways across B.C. as part of the campaign.

“Being able to meet some SOBC athletes reminded me of why we were doing it,” Leaver said. “It was a worthwhile and rewarding experience, and I would absolutely do it again.”
