Canada Posts new $200-million processing plant on Sea Island looks set to play an integral role in the countrys e-commerce drive.

The now under-construction plant next to YVR on Ferguson Road is being built to sustain and grow the carriers connections to the Far East, plugging deeper into the Pacific Rim economy.

The Hon. Steven Fletcher, Minister of State (Transport), and Canada Post President and CEO Deepak Chopra revealed on Thursday the strategic role the plant will play as the gateway for e-commerce shipments from Pacific Rim economies entering Canadas largest home delivery and retail network.

With the growth of e-commerce, we are positioning ourselves as a strong and reliable link between Canada and the Far East, said Mr. Chopra.

Our unrivalled delivery, transportation and retail networks already make us the leading provider of business-to-consumer home delivery in Canada.

We will ensure Canada Post remains relevant in an increasingly digital economy, with more packages and fewer letters.

By 2014, the 700,000-square-foot Canada Post Pacific Processing Centre at the Vancouver International Airport will connect e-commerce merchants and consumers, the fastest-growing sector of the delivery business.

The strategic investment is part of Canada Posts $2-billion, multi-year modernization program to build a postal system for the 21st century.
