Steveston might be better known as Richmond’s “cannery row” but there was significant fishing and canning going on in other parts of the city as well.
Terra Nova Cannery was built in 1892 by the Terra Nova Packing (Canning) Co., and it was owned by Duncan and John Rowan.
It operated until 1898 but sat idle until it was bought by BC Packers in 1902.
It closed, however, in 1928.
After closing, the buildings were used for storing nets and the wharves were used for mooring boats.
The Friends of the Richmond Archives (FOTRA) posted a photo on Facebook of the cannery, taken around 1978, shortly before it was demolished.
The pilings from the cannery are still visible along the Terra Nova Park dyke.
“The Terra Nova Cannery, along with the Vancouver and Acme Canneries across the River on Sea Island, were home to a significant Japanese Canadian Community until the forced relocation in 1942,” FOTRA posted on Facebook.
