Massive ice show coming to Richmond

Around 300 Richmond figure skaters are preparing to put on a Stars On Ice-style spectacular next week

Richmond’s very own version of Stars On Ice is just over a week away, with around 300 skaters preparing to wow audiences over two shows.

Richmond’s Connaught Skating Club has been busy over the last few months preparing Earth to Sky, which hits the ice at Minoru Arena on Saturday, March 11.

Just about every figure skater at the club will be involved in the light and music-filled show, from little kids to high-performance, national and international athletes.

As the title suggests, the performance will have two acts, one celebrating the likes of the sky, moon and sun and one embracing the water, the rivers and the land.

“It happens every couple of years but this is the first one since COVID,” explained show director and Connaught coach Angela Duffy.

“We start planning for it before Christmas, then conceptualize for a couple of months and then February we hit the ice with music choices and numbers and rehearsals.

“It will have high-end figure skaters, along with the little guys, the two and three-year-olds, also doing numbers.”

Duffy said they mulled over a few concepts before coming up with Earth to Sky.

“It’s a huge production and investment, so it only happens every so often…it keeps it special for the kids,” she added.

“Plus the club is very busy with international competitions.”

The top skaters at the club have chosen BC Children’s Hospital as the recipient for any donations collected on the day.

Tickets, priced $15, are available from the club’s website at https://www.connaughtsc.com/

Shows are at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. at Minoru Arena on March 11.
