One man is in Delta police custody after a dramatic takedown of a suspect on 56th street following a reported break and enter Monday afternoon in Tsawwassen.
Details about the incident are still unfolding as officers continue to piece together what DPD describes as a “complex set of events.”
Additionally, police are looking to speak with a number of the Good Samaritan’s involved in apprehending a driver who ran from the scene.
Around 12:30 p.m. DPD received a call about a possible break and enter in progress in a residential area near Brandrith Park. As police vehicles began to arrive to the area, a U-Haul van was leaving, and collided with a police vehicle. The officer was not injured in the collision.
“Due to concerns over public safety police did not pursue the U-Haul van, but noted the driver leaving at a high rate of speed,” said DPD public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf. “The U-Haul was observed heading north on 56th street. According to witnesses the U-Haul allegedly ran a red light, clipped one vehicle, jumped the median and was involved in a head-on collision with another van.”
Leykauf said there were no injuries reported from the series of collisions.
She said according to a number of witnesses, the U-Haul driver then exited the van, and then tried to take another vehicle in the area of the Town Centre mall. When that attempt was unsuccessful the driver fled, and was apprehended by a number of citizens in the area. Officers then arrived to arrest the driver, who is currently in police custody.
“A wide variety of police resources have been brought in, and this is still an on-going incident,” added Leykauf. “This was definitely an unusual series of events to unfold in our quiet town, but we’re thankful that no one was hurt.”
DPD say they will release more information when it becomes available.
Any witnesses who haven’t yet spoken to police, or who may have taken photos or videos related to the incident are asked to call 6604-946-4411 and indicate they have information related to file No. 18-8823.
