A man who pleaded guilty to kidnapping a victim from a vehicle at gunpoint in Richmond remains without a lawyer as his sentencing approaches.

Michael Husain appeared from custody via video at Vancouver provincial court Oct. 20, where he faces a string of charges connected to the incident in September 2021.

Husain has admitted to kidnapping using a firearm, assault causing bodily harm and using a firearm to commit an indictable offence.

Crown prosecutor Jeremy Hermanson told Judge Harbans Dhillon Husain had fired a lawyer and remains without one.

“Mr. Husain is looking at a significant sentence,” Hermanson said. “It does have to be moving forward at some point. It’s been a long time since the offence.”

Three others were charged in connection with the kidnapping: Ashley Smith, 30; Harman Parmar, 24; and a fourth person, whose name is subject to a court publication ban.

According to a Vancouver Police Department (VPD) statement last fall, the victim was assaulted, restrained and suffered significant, but non-life threatening injuries.

Following a “brief pursuit” by police, VPD officers rescued the victim and the four suspects were arrested in Richmond.

An investigation into home invasions, police said, led to the suspects being charged with kidnapping.
