A Richmond man claimed he was targeted in a cryptocurrency scam.

A man is claiming he was defrauded $1 million in a cryptocurrency scam, according to Richmond police.

The man told the Richmond RCMP he’d been contacted by what he thought was a Canadian telecommunications company and told he was a suspect in an overseas financial crime.

Just this week, Burnaby RCMP were warning about similar crypto frauds, citing a case where a senior in that community was scammed $7.5 million.

According to a report going to Richmond city council next week, the man approached police on March 1 about the crypto scam.

RCMP say the incident is under investigation.

Burnaby RCMP is telling the public to watch out for the following warning signs that are seen in cryptocurrency frauds:

  • An unusual high return on investments in a short amount of time
  • Suspects messaging victims at all times of the day, taking interest in their personal life
  • Suspects providing victims with excuses to use when going to the bank to take out money
  • No formal investment contract or information relating to the product being purchased

The News has reached out to the RCMP for more information.
