A memorial service was held at Garry Point Park on Friday to honour fishermen who died at sea or while at work.
Families, loved ones, as well as representatives from the City of Richmond, Britannia Shipyards and other local organizations and businesses laid wreaths at the Steveston Fishermen's Memorial, a sculpture shaped like a fishing needle inscribed with the names of men from Steveston.
“It’s good to remember those that we’ve forgotten. I remember, not mine, but other's family members being lost,” said Kay Morris, a Steveston resident who visited the memorial sculpture with her family on Friday.
April 28 is Canada’s national Workers' Mourning Day, which was first declared in 1991 to remember all workers killed or injured on the job.
