YVR's net zero plan is bogus according to a Richmond News reader

Dear Editor,

Re: “YVR unveils plans to reach net zero emissions by 2030,” Online, Oct. 9 (see story on page 17)

Vancouver International Airport’s claim that it will have net-zero emissions in 2030 is “greenwashing.”

Ninety-eight percent of the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the airport are released from airplanes that take off and land at the airport, yet YVR’s so-called “net-zero plan” doesn’t commit to reduce these emissions at all. In fact, the airport’s Master Plan projects a 33 per cent increase in the number of polluting flights between 2017 and 2037.

Until YVR commits to work with airlines to reduce and eliminate airplane emissions, it does not have a net-zero commitment or plan at all.
