One of the most respected members of Richmond’s Indo-Canadian community has been inducted posthumously into the B.C. Business Laureate by the Junior Achievement of British Columbia (JABC).

Asa Singh Johal was inducted at the 17th annual B.C. Business Laureante’s Hall of Fame on May 30 and was described as a “great pioneer, industrialist and philanthropist.”

Johal was a founder and major donor of the India Cultural Centre of Canada Gurdwara (Sikh Temple) Nanak Niwas on Richmond’s Highway to Heaven.

Richmond was saddened by the news of Johal’s passing in 2021, but his work and leadership continue throughout the local Indo-Canadian community.

The Business Laureates of British Columbia Hall of Fame honours the achievements of B.C. leaders that have shaped the province and the country.

“This year, with his posthumous induction into the BLCB Hall of Fame, you also celebrate the life and career of Asa Johal,” said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to the JABC.

“His many accomplishments as an entrepreneur, philanthropist and outstanding Canadian are most deserving of this tribute and I join his family and all those present this evening in honouring his legacy.”
