Aberdeen Centre in Richmond is quickly becoming the place in the region to be to celebrate the countdown to Chinese New Year.

And on Wednesday night, as many as 5,000 are expected to cram into the mall to welcome the Year of the Sheep, said Joey Kwan, Aberdeen Centre's spokeswoman,

"People are coming from all over for this," Kwan said. "It's not just from the Lower Mainland. Lots of people are coming from south to the border, too."

The mall's Chinese New Year Flower and Gift Fair has also been a draw with its lineup of entertainment, sales and celebrations last weekend in the centre court area.

That will be the site Wednesday evening for the countdown which will be carried live by Fairchild Television starting at 10:30 p.m.

The party keeps going Thursday, too, with a Golden Dragon and Lion dance in the outdoor courtyard at 11 a.m.

On Sunday, the B.C. Chinese Orchestra, B.C. Youth Chinese Orchestra and Vancouver Academy of Dance are scheduled to perform starting at 1 p.m.

And on Sunday, the Zhong Yang Music & Arts Academy and Colours of Dance Academy take the stage from 3 to 4 p.m.
