Kudos: Islamic centre donates care packages to mark World Refugee Day

Since 2001, June 20 has been designated World Refugee Day by the United Nations

M.T.O. Shahmaghsoudi School of Islamic Sufism, a global non-profit organization, has donated care packages to 14 refugee and newcomer families across the Lower Mainland, including one family Richmond.

The care packages – made up of hand-sewn face masks and pantry essentials such as canned and dry foods, baby formula and flour and sugar – were donated on Saturday to mark World Refugee Day today (June 20).

“On this day we celebrate the strength, courage, and resilience of refugees in our communities and across the globe,” said Golzar Ejadi, MTO volunteer, in a statement. “We hope that these donations bring a smile to their face and provide a sense of support and community.”

Since 2001, June 20 has been designated World Refugee Day by the United Nations to honour and celebrate refugees around the world.

In total, MTO volunteers donated about 450 kilograms of food and 80 handmade face masks to 14 families in Richmond, Burnaby, New Westminster and Vancouver.

S.U.C.C.E.S.S., Burnaby Family Life and Burnaby MLAs Anne Kang and Janet Routledge helped provide MTO volunteers with information on how best to support the families.

Since the start of the pandemic, MTO volunteers have donated thousands of PPE items, food and care packages around the globe.
