Thieves who broke into a vehicle in Richmond appear to have swiped keys and personal information that allowed them to burgle a house and steal a pickup in Burnaby this week.

Burnaby RCMP got a report just before 2 a.m. Monday of a break-and-enter at a residence in the 6000-block of Southoaks Cres. in Burnaby.

Thieves had walked off with electronics and personal items worth thousands of dollars, according to police.

They had also stolen a black Dodge Ram pickup truck with keys apparently purloined during the break-in.

“It is believed that the thieves had keys to the home that was broken into,” Cpl. Daniela Panesar told the NOW in an emailed statement. “These keys were stolen from the complainant’s vehicle while the complainant was in Richmond.”

Burnaby RCMP is once again urging residents not to leave keys, garage remotes or personal information in their vehicles to avoid a similar fate.

“In this instance, it appears as though the thieves stole the house keys from the complainant’s vehicle and obtained their address from documents in the vehicle that enabled them to then commit the break-and-enter at the complainant’s home,” Panesar said.
