Looking to get a head start on Christmas shopping?

The Richmond Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store has some suggestions for early holiday shoppers – unique finds like a small ivory skull or hand-carved figurines.

The popular thrift story on Chatham Street in Steveston – that raises money for patient care in Richmond – has some special items that will go on sale on Saturday at noon.

The aforementioned ivory skull is priced at $180 and is available at the jewelry counter.

Thrift store staff are speculating the ivory skull might be a “netsuke,” a Japanese ornamental piece made from ivory that was used to attach a medicine box, a pipe or tobacco pouch to a traditional Japanese men’s sash, according to Britannia.com. They were used during the Tokugawa period (1603-1868).

Meanwhile, a Mickey Mouse-inspired stainless steel cream and sugar set, designed by architect Michael Graves for Disney, will also go on sale at noon Saturday.

The hand-carved wooden figurines are priced at $20 apiece and the framed prints are just $12 each.

Two of the wood carvings resemble traditional Finnish figurines, namely “akka” (the woman) and “ukko” (the man).
