Get set for the green; 41,000 green carts will roll into Richmond homes in April and May

With the delivery of 41,000 green carts over the next two months, Richmond residents in single-family homes and more than 11,000 townhomes are on track to use the city's new Green Cart program.

With the delivery of 41,000 green carts over the next two months, Richmond residents in single-family homes and more than 11,000 townhomes are on track to use the city's new Green Cart program.

The program, for recycling food scraps and yard trimmings, was brought in to cope with the anticipated disposal ban on food scraps in 2015.

The Green Cart delivery schedule aligns with the regular collection zones for residents in single-family homes and townhomes with the city's garbage service and/or Blue Box program.

Residents will receive their new Green Cart, a complimentary kitchen container, an information kit that includes tips and information on Green Cart recycling and the new service for large item pick up. Sample kitchen container paper bin liners and discount coupons for additional liners will also be provided, along with retail information on where these items may be purchased.

Green Carts will be delivered based on the day your garbage gets picked up:

Monday collection day: April 2 - April 15;

Tuesday collection day: April 16 - April 30;

Wednesday collection day: May 1 - May 15;

Thursday collection day: May 16 - May 30.

The new Large Item Pick up Service will allow residents to arrange curbside pickup of up to four large items, such as furniture, each year.

Both the Green Cart recycling and the new Large Item Pick Up service will start on residents' first collection day in June.
