On Thursday, residents across Richmond will dropping, covering and holding on as part of a province-wide earthquake drill. Simultaneously, an initiative through the University of Victoria will simulate an operations exercise on the Canada Line.
According to the City of Richmond, “Richmond's soil is made of silt and sand...the energy caused by an earthquake could take longer to dissipate and the shaking more amplified in these softer soils than it would be on firmer soil and bedrock.”
As such, the city is encouraging Richmondites to practice earthquake safety by participating in The Great British Columbia ShakeOut scheduled for Oct. 18 at 10:18 a.m.
During the drill, in partnership with UVic, Protrans BC – operator of the Canada Line – will “perform a simulated operations exercise on the Canada Line rapid transit system as if responding to a megathrust earthquake.”
In addition to participating in a drill, the city will host an Emergency Programs ShakeOut BC table at city hall from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday. Resources will be available on how to protect yourself and your family.
