FortisBC is warning its customers to beware in Richmond and beyond after receiving reports of door-to-door salespeople claiming to be affiliated with the genergy provider.
A large number of the gas company’s customers are reportedly being visited by people selling furnaces who are telling people that they’re associated to FortisBC.
And with Fraud Prevention Month just around the corner in March, FortisBC is asking people to be cautious of anyone showing up at their door unannounced.
“FortisBC does not perform unannounced inspections on home equipment, including meters, or visit homeowners to sell or repair any products,” according to a statement from the company.
“Our visits are often by appointment, and we always carry valid identification.
“FortisBC takes the security and privacy of our customers very seriously. We advise customers to contact us immediately at 1-888-224-2710 or online if they receive a suspicious sales call or have questions about their appliances.”
In addition, FortisBC said people should:
Always ask for photo identification and get the name of the person and the business;
If the salesperson asks to see your gas or electricity bill, decline. Your bill contains personal information and should not be shared with anyone;
If you ask the salesperson to leave, they must leave right away. If you feel unsafe, call the police;
In the event that you are asked to sign an agreement or any paperwork, ensure you read the fine print and understand what you are signing.
If you believe you have been a victim of fraud, you can report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, through its website, or by phone at 1-888-495-8501.
As well, let your local police department know.
You can also report instances of misleading or deceptive marketing practices to the Competition Bureau, using its online complaint form or by phone at 1-800-348-5358.
