A free webinar is hoping to raise awareness about Richmond primary care resources for the Cantonese-speaking community.
The Zoom webinar, co-hosted by Richmond Primary Care Network (PCN) and UBC's interCultural Online Health Network (iCON), will take place on Wednesday, March 8 at 10:30 a.m. It will last around 90 minutes.
Attendees will get to learn more about team-based care and the roles of nurse practitioners from Linda Leung, a nurse practitioner. Leung will also be offering tips for finding primary care providers in Richmond.
The event is part of Richmond PCN and iCON's collaboration to increase multicultural perspectives when designing PCNs, as well as to raise awareness of PCNs among multicultural groups.
"Research has shown that cultural minorities are disproportionately affected by chronic disease and are also disadvantaged in accessing health care services and information," said Jorge Hernandez. Hernandez is a program lead at the Richmond Division of Family Practice, an organization working with family physicians to improve access to primary care in the city.
"These communities are limited by language, health literacies, navigation challenges, racism, and access to culturally relevant health resources."
Hernandez added that the Cantonese-speaking community was chosen for the project because 45 per cent of Richmond residents speak Chinese languages as their mother tongue, with Cantonese being one of the most common non-official languages.
