Charges have been laid against a 31-year-old man who allegedly stole credit card data and completed hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of fraudulent transactions in Richmond and Surrey.
According to Surrey RCMP, Gangandeep Dhillon, who is from Surrey, was charged with 28 counts of fraud-related charges on March 26.
In total, over $458,000 in fraudulent credit card transactions were completed in Surrey and Richmond, according to Surrey RCMP.
Surrey RCMP’s economic crimes unit began their investigation June 28, 2017, after a Surrey business reported they believed their customers’ credit card data had been compromised.
Some of the information received indicated that multiple fraudulent credit card transactions had been made using stolen data from multiple credit cards, impacting numerous victims, according to Surrey RCMP.
As the investigation progressed, according to Surrey RCMP, the fraud incidents in Surrey were connected to similar incidents in Richmond. There, further transactions were made using compromised credit card data.
“This was a complex file given the volume of transactions and data which had to be investigated, said Surrey RCMP Insp. Beth McAndie.
“Dealing with multiple transactions in different jurisdictions, also increased the complexity. We are very pleased to be bringing this investigation to the next step and entering the court process.”
Surrey RCMP recommend that anyone who has been the victim of credit card fraud:
