Flooding halts glass, foam recycling in Richmond

Recycle BC is asking residents to hold onto glass and foam and not to mix them in with other recyclables.

With a facility that recycles glass under water, the City of Richmond is halting its glass and foam recycling starting Monday until further notice.

Glass won’t be collected with regular roadside garbage/recycling pickup and neither glass nor foam will be accepted at the Richmond Recycling Depot on Lynas Lane.

Not only is the main glass processing facility under water, transportation routes to alternate sites are closed and many of the trucks normally used to transport these recyclables are being redeployed to move essential goods and medical supplies, according to the City of Richmond.

This will affect recycling services across Metro Vancouver.

The province is under a state of emergency after a severe storm earlier this week brought heavy rains, flooding many areas in southern B.C. and causing mudslides and road washouts.

The city said there are no other impacts to garbage, green cart, blue box recycling or other recycling depot services at this time.

The city is asking residents to hold on to glass and foam for now and to not place them with other recycling materials.
