First responders gathered near the River Rock Casino after receiving a call regarding a stranded kayaker on Saturday evening.
Richmond Fire-Rescue (RFR) told the Richmond News it received a call about a kayaker who was stranded in the Fraser River near River Drive and Great Canadian Way.
RFR was joined by Richmond RCMP and the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) to search for the individual but there was "no evidence of any kayaker during that time," according to Grant Wyenberg, acting deputy chief of RFR.
BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) was also called to the area around 6:15 p.m., but the two ambulances that responded were eventually cancelled by RFR, said a spokesperson with BCEHS.
Wyenberg added that coast guards continued to look for the kayaker on Sunday, and firefighters will "assist if a request is made" or an update is provided by the public.
"Richmond Fire-Rescue would like to thank the caller who reported this incident, and we encourage the public to always call 911 when they see smoke, fire, or anyone in distress," said Wyenberg.
