Delta police say they are receiving complaints by Delta residents nearly every day of some kind of phone scam.
Police say these phone scams are particularly vulnerable to seniors and new immigrants to the community.
“Typically someone will receive a call saying they owe thousands of dollars to Taxation Canada or Revenue Canada,” said DPD in a notice to the public on their Facebook page. “Then the caller may threaten that if the person doesn't pay up, or if they hang up, that a warrant will be issued for their arrest. Victims are sometimes instructed to pay via gift cards or bitcoin ATMs.
“This is always a scam. Revenue Canada does not accept payment in gift cards or bitcoin, and you will not be arrested for not paying taxes. Our best advice is just to hang up.”
