The deadline for paying property taxes is quickly approaching.
Property taxes are due on Friday, July 2.
The City of Richmond said it mailed tax notices out to property owners at the end of May, however, those who haven’t received a statement are asked to contact the city’s tax department at 604-276-4145.
All property owners, said the city, are responsible for property tax payments and applicable penalties, regardless of whether or not the tax notice is received.
The cashier area at Richmond City Hall has been reopened for tax and utility payments only, and business hours are 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday (City Hall will be closed on July 1).
However, cash will not be accepted. Payments may only be made via cheque, debit or credit card.
Alternatively, payments can be made:
- Online or in person through your financial institution
- Online by credit card (service fees apply) through the city’s website
- Mailing a cheque (Don’t send cash in the mail. Postmarks will not be accepted as the payment date.)
- By cheque in the City Hall drop box (Don’t deposit cash, as cash won’t be processed)
The B.C. government, meanwhile, is now responsible for all home owner grants claimed in the province.
If eligible, residential property owners must apply for their home owner grant online, or by calling the Home Owner Grand Administration at 1-888-355-2700 for assistance.
According to the city, if taxes aren’t paid and/or grants are not claimed by July 2, a five-per-cent penalty will be charged on all current taxes outstanding. A further five-per-cent penalty will be charged on all outstanding tax amounts after Sept. 2.
