A Richmond kennel has been reported to the BC Prosecution Service after an investigation was carried out by the B.C. SPCA.

Animal cruelty charges have now been recommended by the B.C. SPCA against BC Canine, which used to operate near the foot of No. 3 Road, close the dyke.

However, the business in question is now under new ownership, with new staff, and is now called Richmond Dog Boarding and Play.

The Richmond News understands the report and subsequent recommendations were sent to Crown Counsel in June after the SPCA received a number of complaints about the kennel in February.

The Crown is now reviewing the file to determine whether or not the charges will be approved against the former owner of the business.

Although not able to speak to the details of the case, a spokesperson for the prosecution service confirmed to the News that a report has been received from the SPCA about BC Canine and “that it has been assigned to a specialized prosecutor to be reviewed.”

The development comes six months after the News reported how a local dog owner had filed a neglect complaint with the SPCA against a Richmond kennel.

Paul Bhullar decided to speak out after reading media reports two weeks earlier about another owner who alleged his dog was neglected and starved during a three-week stay at BC Canine.

Bhullar claimed his six-month-old Italian mastiff Drogo’s two-week stint of in-board training at BC Canine resulted in the family pet coming back sick and with “ribs showing” at the end of December.

The B.C. SPCA told the News back in February that, until then, the charity had never investigated BC Canine.
