Richmond’s Oval Village area will be getting a new childcare centre, providing up to 37 licensed spaces for children.

The preliminary plan for the centre – located at 6899 Pearson Way near River Road – is to accommodate group child care for infants under 36 months, as well as group child care for children aged 30 months to five years, according to city spokesperson Clay Adams.

It’s anticipated that construction on the centre will begin in early 2022, said Adams.

The initial concept will include both indoor and outdoor play spaces, as per licensing requirements, but further planning and development work is still to be done.

“It’s not clear how access to the child care spaces will work at this time,” Adams said, “although the centre is clearly being developed to meet an emerging as well as existing community need for child care spaces.”

The facility is being built as part of an agreement between the city and the developer, Oval 8 Holdings Ltd.

The Pearson Way site includes a larger high rise, high density, mixed-used development, said Adams, which will be “phased in over time.” In addition to the child care centre, the development will also include parks, streets, open spaces and other amenities.

“While the land on which that facility will exist is part of the entire parcel owned by the developer, our agreement is that the portion on which the child care facility sits will revert to city ownership upon completion,” said Adams.
