Following an incident last week where a librarian was assaulted at the Richmond Public Library, the city is taking a stance on public safety.

“Richmond is known to be a safe and harmonious community,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie in a press release. “We are committed to providing a healthy and respectful environment by establishing and maintaining a culture of responsibility and accountability at the individual, leadership and corporate levels.”

The city said it prioritizes providing safe and welcoming spaces for all residents and staff and that respectful and socially responsible behaviour is expected. The city also pointed out that it has policies and codes of conduct in place to ensure public safety and that staff are trained to deal with difficult situations.

“Conduct of this nature is unacceptable and will not be tolerated in Richmond,” Brodie said, referring to last week’s incident. “Council is unified in our support for the employee and organization impacted by this event.”
