The City of Richmond has received more than $2.5 million from the province to strengthen its dikes.

The money, from the province’s Community Emergency Preparedness Fund, will be used to strengthen and replace riprap along the dike in Terra Nova as well as in east Richmond along River Road close to Cambie Road.

“This will reduce flood risks due to climate change-induced sea level rise, a top priority in the City’s Flood Protection Management Strategy,” said city spokesperson Clay Adams.

A further grant of $150,000 will be used to evaluate how natural infrastructure can be integrated into future dike construction so that it enhances the environment and promotes habitat cultivation.

This work will primarily focus on Sturgeon Bank.

Across B.C. more than 50 local governments and First Nations are receiving a share of $39 million through the emergency preparedness fund.

Projects include small-scale structural flood projects and improvements to local flood-mitigation strategies, including more accurate flood mapping, the province explained.
