Cigarette contraband seized in Richmond, middle-aged women arrested

Police have arrested two middle-aged women after seizing a large shipment of contraband cigarettes.

In early August, Richmond RCMP officers acted on information about a large incoming shipment of contraband cigarettes.

And on Aug. 11, just before 2 p.m., two suspects were observed in the 16000 block of Portside Road in east Richmond, loading the shipment into an awaiting Toyota minivan.

Richmond RCMP officers arrested two women, ages 53 and 55 respectively. One of the suspects is a Richmond resident while the other is from Vancouver. The suspects are not known to police.

Approximately 1,500 cartons, or the equivalent of 300,000 individual cigarettes, were seized.

Police are continuing their investigation.
