A Richmond Mountie was seriously injured after the driver of a stolen car allegedly rammed two police cruisers while trying to escape arrest.
The officer was responding to a call at around 10: 30 a.m. on Tuesday when Richmond RCMP received word from Vancouver police about a stolen vehicle that had crossed into Richmond.
Shortly afterward, unmarked police cars found the man standing outside the stolen car in the Bridgeport area of north Richmond.
However, when the officers tried to arrest the man, he ignored them and jumped into the stolen vehicle, according to police.
It's alleged he then allegedly rammed the two police cars, injuring one of the plainclothes officers before fleeing the scene.
A brief police chase took place, before senior officers called it off, relying instead on the Air 1 chopper to track the suspect vehicle into New Westminster, where it was joined by the city's police force.
The driver then allegedly struck a civilian car at River Drive and No. 5 Road, resulting in minor injuries to the adult female driver. Her four-year-old son, who was also in the car, was not injured.
The suspect then entered a car dealership, where he appeared to attempt to steal another vehicle, but was apprehended by New Westminster police.
Police said the suspect showed "no concern for the safety of innocent people on the road, and one of our officers is seriously injured." He remains in custody and will appear in court shortly.
The injured Mountie suffered a broken leg and remains in hospital.
