Update: Bird caused power outage for more than 5,000 Richmond residents

A large bird was electrocuted after hitting a wire in the Seafair neighbourhood.

Power has been restored to Richmond residents in the Seafair neighbourhood after a sudden outage on Sunday evening.

According to BC Hydro, 5,449 BC Hydro customers were left in the dark due to a bird contacting the wires in the area.

A Twitter user took to social media and said that they heard "a Big Bang" and possibly saw "something explode and smoke."

Richmond resident Tom MacIntyre told the Richmond News described it as a large bird that looked like an eagle had flown into the power lines on Williams Road and had fallen to the ground.

"Its body was blackened from the burn and there was a visible electricity exit wound on its wing," he said MacIntyre, adding that the bird was no longer alive when he saw it.

The power was out for approximately two hours and affected the area north of Sable Avenue, west of Railway Avenue and south of Granville Avenue.
